About Willem Steytler

With a vision of founding his own firm, Willem took the thoughtful leap in 2024, establishing River House Studio. Alongside leading the studio, he contributes to the academic sphere at the progressive School of Explorative Architecture, embodying his belief in the cross-pollination of academia and practice to achieve an almost alchemical outcome.

Born on January 2, 1994, Willem Frederik Steytler III inherited both his name and his inspiration from his grandfather, a celebrated pilot and war hero. Captivated by tales of daring missions during WWII, the Berlin Airlift, and world record flights, Willem aspired to follow this legacy. By seventeen, he became one of the youngest in the country to earn a Private Pilot’s License, charting his own path through the skies.

Yet Willem’s talents reached beyond aviation. With a natural artistic gift, he earned numerous awards in art competitions and discovered a new fascination in architecture. Committing to this passion, he pursued a Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS) at Nelson Mandela University, graduating in 2016, followed by a Master’s in Architecture in 2018.

In 2019, Willem moved to Cape Town, immersing himself in five years of diverse experience within prominent commercial offices, contributing to projects of varying scales and sectors. After passing his board exam in 2022, he registered as a Professional Architect and expanded his expertise further in 2023 with a course in property development and investment through the University of Cape Town.

With a vision of founding his own practice, Willem took a thoughtful leap in 2024, establishing River House Studio. His work is fueled by a dedication to architecture that honors both innovation and purpose, striving always to create meaningful spaces and inspire positive change.

The Story

At the foot of a great mountain, perched on the banks of a small stream and sheltered by majestic oak trees, lies a picturesque farm known as River House. The farmstead is a vision of awe-inspiring beauty, with its ochre-painted manor house and towering gables dating back to the Edwardian era. River House is where I had the privilege of growing up, surrounded by the charm of the winelands outside Robertson. As the fifth generation to live on this land, I felt deeply rooted, a part of its story.

River House was founded by my great-great-grandfather and, in time, passed on to his son, my great-grandfather, who rose to become an acclaimed winemaker. At just thirteen, he inherited the mantle of tending this land and, with his own hands, shaped a legacy of dedication and beauty. Over the years, my grandmother and then my father carried the farm’s spirit forward, nurturing it with both care and resilience, navigating the shifting tides of time and economic pressures. Although River House is no longer in our family’s hands, its memory endures, its beauty lingering like a cherished dream.

Those early years on the farm laid a foundation—a quiet influence that shaped my view of the world through the lens of that serene landscape. I believe the places where we first open our eyes to the world imbue us with an unspoken understanding—a blueprint for life. In my case, formal training in architecture later refined this sensibility, transforming those early impressions into design principles.

Naming my firm River House Studio is a tribute to the place that continues to inspire me. With each project, I strive to capture a fraction of River House’s unassuming beauty and rich atmosphere. My goal is to create spaces that feel genuine and lived-in—places where others can experience the same sense of belonging I once knew. To me, a design that achieves this is a success—a true home, as I’ve come to understand it.
