As River House Studio’s inaugural commission, this project holds a special place in our journey and remains a proud milestone.

The brief challenged us to design a compact yet functional apartment block on a tight triangular site in Durbanville, Cape Town. Each apartment, at 65 square meters, was to include two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and two secure parking bays.

The resulting design features eight thoughtfully crafted apartments. Each unit boasts a spacious living and dining area, an open-plan kitchen that flows seamlessly into a private terrace with a built-in braai, and views overlooking the Durbanville Horse Racecourse. Additionally, the complex includes a communal garden space to encourage a sense of community among residents.

This architectural intervention aims to provide lower middle-class families with access to quality housing in a prestigious suburban neighbourhood. Located near top schools and essential amenities, the development fosters social inclusion and offers residents the benefits of suburban living—security, convenience, and outdoor living. The concept aligns carefully with the densification called for by the town planning code.

The architectural language is a refined interpretation of suburban ideals, enriched with mid-century modern influences. The design employs a straightforward post-and-beam structure, emphasising lightness and transparency. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows invite natural light into the interiors, creating airy, welcoming spaces that blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living.

This project embodies our commitment to crafting inclusive, contextually sensitive architecture that enhances both the built environment and the lives of its users.

House Bisset

The brief for this project was to transform the existing traditional 60’s cottage into a contemporary home. This was achieved by adding an additional storey to the building and reconfiguring the ground floor plan to create an open-plan design, while retaining as much of the existing structure as possible.
